About Dr. Widner
Dr. Matthew Widner is an orthopaedic surgeon with subspeciality fellowship training in sports medicine. He specializes in complex sports medicine procedures involving the knee and shoulder. He also specializes in shoulder, knee, and hip replacement surgery including the direct anterior approach. His patient centered approach focuses on providing excellent and up to date care in order to get the patient back to the lifestyle and activities they enjoy.
Born in Jacksonville, he is a Florida native. He played lacrosse in high school which is where he developed a passion for sports and taking care of sports related injuries. Following high school, he attended the University of Florida where he graduated with honors with a Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology and Cell Science and a minor in Business Administration. He then went on to medical school at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine in Tampa. Following this, he completed his 5 year orthopaedic surgery residency at Pennsylvania State University. During residency, he participated in grant funded research projects resulting in multiple publications, podium presentations, and panel discussions. He also served as chief resident in his final year of residency. He then went on to the University of North Carolina for fellowship training in sports medicine where he was assistant team physician for UNC football and basketball, as well as NC State wrestling and gymnastics. He was also the head team physician for two local high school football teams.
In his free time, Dr. Widner enjoys spending time with his family, playing golf, and cooking. He is grateful to be practicing in Florida and is dedicated to providing exceptional care to his patients in the area.
